Mark Wessels' Rudimental Technique

     Exercise #5: Mr. Freeze

The next series of exercises deals with “two height” techniques – being able to play an accented stroke at a full height, controlling the rebound of the accent, then playing soft taps with a relaxed wrist motion. The control over the natural rebound of the stick is one of the most important aspects in rudimental drumming! This exercise works on 3 important strokes styles: the controlled stroke (or “downstroke”), the tap and the upstroke.

Start this exercise by playing an accented note from a full height (9–12 inches). As the stick strikes the head, increase the pressure in the fulcrum and back fingers to keep the stick from bouncing back up, “freezing” the stick close to the drum (3 inches). Then, immediately relax the hand! Play the 8th note taps at a 3 inch height – with a relaxed wrist motion. The final quarter note is an upstroke – a soft tap that is lifted in preparation for the next accent. Remember: Squeeze the stick slightly on the accent stroke to freeze the stick close to the drum, then IMMEDIATELY relax for the taps and upstroke!
