Performance Spotlight / Play-along Track: Harvey Mason / “Chameleon” (2014)

“Chameleon” / 2014

Herbie Hancock originally released this jazz standard in 1973 on the Head Hunters album. The track was co-written and performed by Harvey Mason! Now, forty-one years later, Harvey is BACK with a new creative incarnation of this classic track.

The lead composition, “Chameleon,” from Herbie Hancock’s 1973 landmark Head Hunters serves, in part, as the signifying reference for Harvey Mason’s new CD. Chameleon features some of the brightest young jazz talents on the scene today.

In response to being Harvey Mason’s favorite video:

“I was absolutely thrilled when I found out that Mr. Mason picked my video for his top choice! If I would have known from the start…well…ehm…I would probably have practiced some more, haha! As soon as I found out about the Chameleon play along contest, I knew I wanted to participate: I’ve been using Vic Firth sticks for years now. Just because you can always rely on them and they’re simply so nice to play with. Also a big fan of the Vic Firth’s headphone: never a recording session without it. I wanna thank Harvey Mason & Vic Firth for this inspiring ‘Chameleon’ challenge and the opportunity for drummers all over the world to expand our creativity and musicality!”
