Dr. Alex Smith is Assistant Professor of Percussion at University of Central Missouri. Smith received his D.M.A. in Percussion Performance at Michigan State University, where he also received his M.A. in Ethnomusicology and M.M. in Percussion Performance. Smith received his B.M. in Percussion Performance from East Carolina University. Smith is a member of Without Borders, a percussion quartet that has toured in Taiwan, Japan, and the USA. As a composer, his piece The Building of Asgard was performed by MSU at PASIC 2017. In spring 2019 Smith conducted ethnographic research in Ghana for eight months with a Fulbright-Hays DDRA Award.

  • WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

    Performing my piece "The Building of Asgard" at PASIC 2017 with the MSU Percussion Studio was an incredibly rewarding experience. The energy on stage that day was off the charts! And we had a blast performing the piece for such a fun audience.

    My creativity as a composer often comes from my work as an ethnomusicologist. I usually think about socio-cultural concepts, and then those concepts eventually turn into some sort of musical idea.
