Carter Vaughan is a touring drummer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter/producer based in Los Angeles, California. At 9 years old, he began taking drum lessons from his father, who previously played in Christian rock band, Audio Adrenaline. Born in Indiana and raised Colorado, Carter cut his teeth playing in churches, youth groups, & church camps. By middle school, he was recruited for the high school jazz band and began traveling the states performing in various jazz festivals, receiving international recognition for musicianship. He later attended Colorado Universitys music school to study performance, recording arts, and music business.

Years later, upon moving to Los Angeles, Carter began working with Tate McRae, with whom hes toured internationally and performed at several festivals such as Lollapalooza, Music Midtown, Firefly and Governors Ball as well as the VMAs and iHeart Radio Festival. Throughout his career growth, hes developed a unique expertise in musical direction, Ableton Live, and hybrid electronic drum performance. Carter has also worked with the likes of LILHUDDY, Peter McPoland, DEWAYNE, Mob Rich, Little Hurt, LUNA AURA and others. When hes not on the road with Tate McRae, Carter spends his time writing and producing alongside a vibrant LA-based songwriting community. He is currently developing a new pop project, goth gf, alongside fellow Tate McRae bandmate, Zachary DeGaetano.

Carter is passionate about creating musical experiences that are impactful and memorable for the listener. For him, this comes down to a vigorous pursuit of musical excellence while remaining a lifelong student of the craft.

  • WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

When I was younger, I had a very narrow view of musical performance that was very self-serving. I would chase that exciting feeling of playing an impressive fill or a flashy groove, but as I continue to mature in my musicianship, I find that my most excellent performances come as a result of focusing on the listener, the artist, and the song as a whole. Once I took the time to step back and understand context, musicality, and what my role plays in the bigger picture, I felt that I truly unlocked the next level of my playing. For me, this means recording myself, studying my performances, and comparing my playing to that of the folks I really look up to. When I learned the value of humility in performance, that changed everything.

  • WORDS OF WISDOM FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF DRUMMERS

I’ll never forget all the moments I stood in the audience and watched a truly incredible drummer deliver a near-perfect performance. The excitement, joy and life it gives me drives me to pursue that same level of excellence and creativity. Drummers like Jake Goss, Carter Beauford, Steve Goold, Tony Royster Jr. (and too many others to name), inspire that drive in me.

  • FAVORITE ZILDJIAN CYMBAL/COMBO

In my opinion, Vic Firth is simply the best, most, consistent manufacturer of sticks I've personally encountered. Additionally, the support I've received from the Vic Firth team has been astounding. I'm honored to be a part of this family.
