Joshua Hunt is a drummer and percussionist based in Nashville, TN. A native of Russellville, KY, he began playing drums at an early age and went on to earn a Bachelors degree from Western Kentucky University and a Masters degree (both with an emphasis in performance) from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. While living in Illinois, Josh was an in-demand orchestral percussionist with the Peoria Symphony, Sinfonia da Camera, and the Danville Symphony, and simultaneously maintained a busy freelance career within the jazz community. Upon moving to Nashville, he was introduced to the Nashville music scene through gigs with the Nashville Jazz Orchestra, and shortly after, landed with Alison Krauss and Union Station for their North American/UK tour in support of the multi-Grammy winning album, œPaper Airplane. He has since gone on to play with the Jerry Douglas Band, Clint Black, The Time Jumpers, Charlie Worsham, Emily West, and Mandy Barnett, to name just a few. As part of a trio with renowned guitarist, Jack Pearson, of the Allman Brothers, he has shared the stage with the Tedeschi Trucks Band and been a part of the Warren Haynes Christmas Jam. Josh is also currently part of a trio lead by popular Nashville guitarist Guthrie Trapp, playing at Rudys Jazz Room, among other venues. He continues to be a sought-after drummer both in the studio and on the stage, and when not practicing or working, can be found reading science and philosophy books, running with his German Shepherd, and watching 80s movies - good or bad.

  • WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

To unlock the “next level” is actually to transcend levels altogether. In my experience, to move as one with a group of people on stage or in a recording studio, is to live in a place where levels don’t exist. Anyone can access it. I’m lucky to have had this experience early in my musical life and I seek it out every time I sit at the drums in any context.

  • WORDS OF WISDOM FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF DRUMMERS

Creative inspiration can come from anywhere at any time. Most often, my creativity is driven by my own desire to find, or create, something unique. Other times, the musicians I’m creating with drive my inspiration. Staying connected to my personal heroes offers inspiration as well. Brian Blade comes to mind in this regard. And finally, staying connected to the massive bigger picture offers an endless supply of creative inspiration.

  • FAVORITE ZILDJIAN CYMBAL/COMBO

I’ve used Vic Ffirth drumsticks since I was 3 years old. Over the years I’ve tried every other stick, and I always come right back to Vic Firth. They are a match for me in a way that is almost inexplicable.
