Marcus Baylor is one of the most creative drummers with an unusual ability to tell a story through improvisation. Born and bred in St. Louis, his journey from playing drums in his fathers church, to graduating from The New School, touring and performing with jazz icons including Cassandra Wilson and Kenny Garrett, and owning the drummers chair in jazz super group, the Yellowjackets for an entire decade is an impressive one. Now, as co-founder of both The Baylor Project and indie label, Be A Light, with his wife, Jean Baylor, they received 2 GRAMMY® nominations for their debut CD aptly titled, œThe Journey.

Most memorable Next-Level Performance
One of my most memorable moments was my first gig with the Yellowjackets at Berklee College of Music. I was really nervous, but I worked hard to make sure I was prepared and I got the gig! -
What Drives Your Creativity?
I’m the most creative when I’m listening to other artists and writing/producing my own music. My favorite band, Commissioned is a huge influence on me. Traveling internationally and experiencing other cultures inspires my creativity as well. -
Why do you choose Vic Firth?
I choose Vic Firth because the quality and the feel of the sticks, brushes, and mallets suites every need for all of the styles I play. There is a confidence I have when my hands touch Vic Firth sticks! The feel of the sticks gives me a balance of playing everything from jazz to laying into a deep groove.
