Paulinho Vicente

Independent / São Paulo Big Band / Gabriel Sater

Paulinho Vicente began his musical journey driven by an interest in jazz and Brazilian instrumental music, developing his career independently as an instrumentalist, both in original projects and as a sideman.

Throughout his career, he has performed alongside important names in Brazilian music such as Toninho Horta, João Bosco, Filó Machado, Maestro Spok, Arthur Verocai, Joyce Moreno, Dominguinhos, Ivan Lins, Leila Pinheiro, among many others, as well as taking part in recordings and concerts with artists from different generations and styles. On the international scene, he has collaborated with North American musicians such as David Kikoski, Ryan Keberle, Ted Nash, Marcus Printup, Chad Lefkowitz, Jake Kelberman, Scott Belck, Trent Austin, Woody Witt, Bob Shew, Davy Mooney, John Ellis, Alison Crockett and Ohad Talmor. He also stands out for his participation in the recording of the album Beams, by pianist Dan Costa, alongside renowned jazz figures such as John Patitucci, Dave Douglas, Mike Stern, Dave Liebman and Hermeto Paschoal.

Artistic exchange, sound research and the possibility of moving between jazz, instrumental music and Brazilian song guide his work, always in search of a personal identity and a dialogue between tradition and contemporaneity.

  • Most Memorable Next-Level Performance?

My most memorable performances are those that contributed decisively to my artistic journey. I especially highlight the concerts and recordings alongside remarkable musicians, experiences marked by deep learning and creative exchange, which left a lasting imprint on my musical identity. National and international tours also played a fundamental role in this process. Through concerts and masterclasses in diverse contexts and with varied audiences, I experienced meaningful encounters that broadened my perspective and strengthened my understanding of music as a universal language. These experiences reaffirm my commitment to artistic growth, human connection, and the ongoing pursuit of an authentic voice within jazz and instrumental music.

  • What Drives Your Creativity?

What drives my creativity is the opportunity to interact with musicians from different repertoires. My master’s research deepened this practice, allowing me to explore new techniques, timbres, and forms of improvisation, strengthening the dialogue between jazz, instrumental music, and Brazilian song. Research and artistic exchange transform these experiences into ideas and creative solutions for my musical work.
