I can barely remember a time when playing the drums wasn't the center of my life. I started playing professionally at age 16. Five to six nights per week through my last 2 years of high school. Rock music was everything to me during those years (and before) but by 18 Jazz took over, then Latin, Funk and everything in between. Every gig requires something different and that's what keeps me interested and inspired. I love drumming, but the thing that matters most to me is music. It gives the drumming purpose.
Most memorable Next-Level PerformanceIn the studio recently recording composer Sven Anderson's new record. Great tunes, great musicians, great studio and all the styles I love...Jazz, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Funk. It was two days but seemed like one. An intense musical experience.
What Drives Your Creativity?Creativity is fueled by all of your life experiences. For me, realizing that creativity requires sitting down at the drums (or piano) without any intentions or plan and allowing the years of practice and experience to shape sound into music.
Why do you choose Vic Firth? For over 30 years I've used only SD1 Generals. Every style, any venue, any dynamic level...perfect! Their large diameter makes it feel like you have something in your hand, the maple keeps them light and the round tip gives a fat sound with fast rebound.
