Nation Beat

When Scott Kettner looks at a map, he sees a direct line that connects the rivers of northeastern Brazil to the parishes of New Orleans and the streets of NYC. Kettner is the guiding force behind Nation Beat, a band whose teeming, vibrant rhythms find common ground in the primal maracatu rhythm of Brazils northeast, the Big Easys funky, hypnotic second-line and the unfettered freedom of big-city downtown jazz. He is the creator of WorldDrumLessons.Com, an online academy for percussionists. His instructional book, Maracatu for Drumset and Percussion is published by Hal Leonard.

"Nation Beat leader Scott Kettner is an expert in vibrant cross-cultural fusions" - Time Out New York

"His drumming seamlessly blends that Louisiana second-line sound with a Brazil-ified backbeat." - WNYC/NPR Radio

  • WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

I felt my playing go to the next level while performing at Farm Aid with Willie Nelson. He was supposed to announce us and walk off stage, instead he plugged his guitar in and smiled at us.

  • WORDS OF WISDOM FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF DRUMMERS

I mostly feel that my creativity drives me. I gather a lot of inspiration from drummers and percussionists in Brazil and New Orleans. Putting these styles together and coming up with something new excites me the most.

  • FAVORITE ZILDJIAN CYMBAL/COMBO

For my entire life, Vic Firth has always been my 'go to' for sticks, mallets and brushes. VF is my #1 choice for crafting their products with innovation, creativity and drumming as their top priory.
