MINIS THEODORAKIS ORCHESTRA

Nikos Skomopoulos was born in Athens in 1967. He took up music at the age of twelve by having lessons on the acoustic quitar at the National Conservatory. In 1982 he started playing the drums and joined several rock groups. In 1986 he began taking lessons in classic percussion instruments at the Conservatory of Athens and since 1987 he also studied drums at the Percussion Workshop of Athens. Since 1988 he has been into jazz, playing in groups and at the same time having tutorials with John Floros and Ralph Peterson.

In 1990, his professional involvement with music began and since then he has collaborated with many acknowledged artists such as Maria Faradouri, Z.Livanelli, Manolis Mitsias,G. Dalaras,E.Vitali,M.Rasoulis, Petros Pandis, Paschalis Terzis, Vassilis Lekkas, Panos and Harris Katsimichas, Glykeria, Sotiria Leonardou, Dimitris Bassis, Antonis Remos, Mary Linda, Doukissa, Julie Massino, Antonis Kalogiannis, Christos Thivaios, Stellios Rokos, Christos Dantis, Euridice, Marios Fraggoulis, Harry Klyn, Lakis Lazopoulos etc. For five consecutive years (1997-2002) he was a member of the house band in 'Stavros tou Notou ', the biggest rock stage in Athens.

Moreover, since 1995 he has been teaching drums at the Filippos Nakas Conservatory and he has also been an active member of the jazz scene playing in Greece with many renowned musicians of the kind both Greeks (G.Kontrafouris, T. Paterelis, K.Baltazanis, P.Benetatos, etc) and foreign (John Pierce, Larry Monroe, Danny Hayes, Peter Massing, etc).

Additionally, he has been a permanent member of the 'Mikis Theodorakis Popular Orchestra' since 2006 and has been participating in tours within Greece and throughout the world (Canada, Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Germany, Egypt, Italy,Turkey). He has also collaborated with the Symphonic Orchestra of ΕÎΤ (the National Radio and Television Station). He has taught at seminars held by the European Programme Comenius (Euro Music Training Project) which addressed German and Finn students among others.

Currently, he continues to take part in concerts with the 'Mikis Theodorakis Popular Orchestra', he has created his own jazz trio and performs with them in jazz clubs.
