PUYA

I began my journey as a young teenager in my homeland Puerto Rico, and grew up around so much music. As a drummer Ive always had an inclination for rock, however my playing is influenced by many different styles including funk, reggae, jazz, blues and traditional Latin rhythms such as salsa, bomba and plena.

My time as the drummer of Puya started at the bands conception in 1990, and still continues til this day. I have done many studio sessions for other artists along the way, but Puya has been the center of my career for the last 30 years. I always felt great chemistry with this band, and musically speaking there are no limits or set parameters. Im able to express myself and take my drumming wherever it may flow.

  • Most memorable Next-Level Performance

One of my most memorable moments was in my hometown San Juan PR at Bahia Urbana venue, which resulted in a live digital release called Vital. Outdoor stage overlooking the San Juan Bay playing to a packed house. The chemistry on that stage definitely reached new levels.
  • What Drives Your Creativity?

I would have to say performing live with other players is what most drives my creativity as a drummer. Just feeding off each other on stage, the music kind of takes a life of it’s own, and the energy from the audience just takes it to other levels.
  • Why do you choose Vic Firth?

I choose Vic Firth because the 5B woods have been a huge part of my life as a drummer for the last 25 years, and I am honored to be a part of the Vic Firth family. The quality of the product is simply unmatched.
