Gloria Yehilevsky

Independent

Gloria Yehilevsky is a London-based composer and improviser who integrates percussion performance with ongoing multimodal research into a fluid cluster of activity. Her compositions are transdisciplinary and collaborative, breaking traditional hierarchies, with a sound that is dynamic, introspective, and exploratory.

She won the PAS/Armand Zildjian award and Italy PAS Vibraphone competition, performed in the San Diego Symphony, World Percussion Group, and alongside members of the Bang on a Can All-Stars at MASS MoCA, where Steve Reich described her as ‘an extremely impressive percussionist… with an amazing combination of technical mastery and riveting energy.’ Her instigatory ethos led to co-directing and performing in Dreamerfly, and other stories (2021), an interdisciplinary jazz and animation work praised as ‘ethereal’ by The Guardian.

A committed educator passionate about music’s transformative impact, she is a frequent guest speaker and artist at academic institutions and conferences worldwide. These have extended from scientific circles—including engagements with The Scientific & Medical Network—to multidisciplinary and specialised artistic events across the UK, Europe, Thailand, Hong Kong, and North America, including invitations to PASIC (Percussive Arts Society International Convention), CalArts, University of Kentucky, Royal Northern College of Music, and the Norwegian Academy of Music, among others.

Currently active internationally in jazz, experimental, and contemporary scenes, recent and upcoming appearances include the Vortex, Centrala, Sō Laboratories (NY), Bern (CH), and Southbank Centre’s Purcell Room as part of Serious’ EFG London Jazz Festival. Gloria is simultaneously working on her PhD in Creative Practice at Trinity Laban Conservatoire.

  • WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

As an improviser, I'm interested in moments. These can be equally transcendent in a practice room or in private as they are on stage. There are a handful of duos and trios I've played, with and without audiences, where I recall telepathic occurrences, instinctually creating a new sound I had never made before, or even discomfort which I reflectively interpreted as a sign of growth–of approaching the unknown.

  • WORDS OF WISDOM FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF DRUMMERS

Having quit music twice. The magnetism that drew me back fuels me. Additionally, non-musical influences and memories, the people in my life, and deep academic and introspective inquiry.

  • FAVORITE ZILDJIAN CYMBAL/COMBO

These are the implements I would use anyway. I'm selective about endorsements and unwilling to compromise my sound.
