Kesivan & The Lights

Kesivan Naidoo’s music has been hailed by critics as “majestic playing, mind-blowing listening” and “the birth of a new South African jazz sound”. Born in 1979 in East London, South Africa, he was among the first POC students in a formerly white school. He fell in love with jazz at 10 and began performing professionally at 14. A “freedom child,” he used music to celebrate South Africa’s hard-won liberation. His sound blends improvisation, expression, and deep listening.
Over 25 years, Kesivan has performed worldwide with jazz greats like Dave Liebman, Danilo Perez, Joe Lovano, Maria Schneider, Miriam Makeba, Zim Ngqawana, and Winston Mankunku. He has played in diverse groups, including Tribe (traditional jazz), Golliwog (funk), Closet Snare (electronic jazz), and Beat Bag Bohemia (Swiss-South African drumming collective).
A University of Cape Town graduate, he won the SAMRO Overseas Scholarship in 2000, studying under Prof. Sanjoy Bandopadhyay in India. He also composed for films, winning a SAFTA in 2001. In 2009, he was named South Africa’s Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year. His 2010 album Instigators of the Revolution of his band Kesivan and The Lights was nominated for a SAMA.
In 2011, he co-founded Cape Town’s most successful jazz club Straight No Chaser, later recognized as one of the world’s top 150 jazz venues by Down Beat Magazine. In 2014, Kesivan and The Lights performed at Carnegie Hall. He earned a Master’s from Berklee College of Music in 2016 and after some years in NYC, he now resides in Basel, Switzerland. In 2022, he arranged and premiered a big band project with the Swiss Jazz Orchestra, touring South Africa with a diverse, internaitonal big band in 2023. Later that year, he arranged Amapiano tunes for big band, performing with famous artists Boohle and Ch’cco in South Africa. Since 2009, he has been an endorsee of Zildjian cymbals.

  • Most Memorable Next-Level Performance?

Carnegie Hall New York City. My band, Kesivan & The Lights, was performing at The Mahogany Room in Cape Town and the director of Carnegie Hall happened to be there. He said it was one of the most inspiring concerts he had ever heard and invited us to perform at the prestigious Carnegie Hall to celebrate South Africa's 20 years of democracy. In October 2014 we played to a packed house and received a standing ovation after our 2nd last song ... I had to tell the audience that we still had our finale to perform and they stood up again after that piece. Needless to say getting 2 standing ovations in one night at Carnegie Hall is one concert I will always remember!

  • What Drives Your Creativity?

I am inspired by music that is moving forward with a very deep root in tradition. I love finding common ground in different cultures and in bringing them together create magic. My personal roots are from Africa and African Music so I am always trying to find ways to add these traditions into my music especially if I am on the drums. It could be Jazz, African, Classical, Hip Hop, Funk, Indian Classical or Folk Music what drives me is finding the freedom in the groove. As a composer I am always trying to find the story in the music. It doesn't matter if it's for film scoring or for my own band ... the story and message is what drives the music. I am always in search of the flow and there are times when it happens and you have some sort of out of body experiences ... so far in my experience if life I have only found this when playing the drums. As I get more time on the instrument the flow becomes easier and the transcendental experience has become more frequent. I don't want to stop... Can't wait till the next one!

  • Why Do You Choose Vic Firth?

I have been using Vic Firth sticks for as long as I can remember playing drums. I started taking drums seriously when I was 12 back in 1992. I went to a drum store and tried every stick they had... I ended up taking home my first pair of Vic Firth American Jazz 1 sticks. They were for me at the time the very best of all the sticks I tried. The balance and the feel of the sticks as well as the sound they produced... they just felt like a natural fit. As I grew into the drums and got developed my approach and sound I ended up settling on AMERICAN CUSTOM SD2 BOLERO DRUMSTICKS. They just feel and sound great ... always perfectly balanced. Life is much better with a pair of Vic Firth AMERICAN CUSTOM SD2 BOLERO Drumsticks !
