I've been fortunate to forge a path in music. Drumming is a gorgeous creative release along with an exciting "discovery" learning component. I get this feeling EVERY time I sit at an instrument. Along with that passion, we develop different skill sets that can lead to employment, especially if you can put aside your ego. I've been lucky to be around legends such as Blondie and Rod Stewart and see the world ten times over. I just try to get it where I fit it, which may be as a as technician, or playing hand percussion, mallets, auxiliary drum kits or all the above. The more skills you can offer, the more opportunity you may have.
