The unmistakable sound and feel of maple! A 5B diameter with a long taper for great rebound. Small barrel tip provides a focused cymbal sound.

Over the years and in collaboration with some of the world's top artists, the design team at Vic has produced thousands of prototypes ranging from the highly experimental to the straight-ahead and everything in between. This has been their secret playground. After a lot of discussion, they have decided that some secrets are just too good to keep quiet.

"We're excited to announce that we're releasing five of our favorite prototype models to the world as our newly branded Modern Jazz Collection," states Neil Larrivee, Vice President of Education and Drumstick Product Development. "They have been staples in our back room for years - and while the name says 'Modern Jazz', we've found that these sticks are exceptional in almost any musical setting.

"Never before available to the public, these five models were developed collaboratively with drummers on the cutting edge of "America's Original Art Form", including Jeff Ballard, Greg Hutchinson, Joe McCarthy and Lewis Nash.

  • Crafted from maple for a lighter feel
  • 5B sized shaft but with a long taper for great balance and rebound
  • Barrel tip offers great response and sound from your cymbals

Awesome Sticks!

"These are truly awesome sticks. The tips are great for cymbal articulation and produce a balanced sound on the drum heads. Even though these are a 5B in size, the maple makes them easily manageable and versatile. Jimmy Chamberlin uses these sticks and if they are good enough for him, you have to give them a try! Thank you Vic Firth."

Feels good in the hands

"I really like the feel of these sticks. The size and weight are great. I only wish they came in this size with nylon tips as the wood tips chip too fast for me. The SD5's have nylon tips but are thinner and shorter than this set."

Love these sticks!

"I've been using Vic Firth sticks for over 45 years. Maple is well balanced and matched. A little too slick out of the sleeve, but easily fixed. My goto model has been the SD4 with a more rounded tip. Great for Jazz and light combo music, but for volume, the MJC4 gives you larger mass for volume and the round tip for cymbal clarity. Closer to the feel of the Driver."

weekend warrior

"Love the maple sticks. I use these in a less volume situation instead of a the SD9 Generals. Great balance and feel with a lighter weight than a similar stick of other wood make up. Best of all, maple has less vibration transfer into the hands and wrist. Very comfortable stick."

Great balance

"These sticks have great weight balance. They're light and fast, yet their thickness offers a solid grip, and they yield great stick definition on the ride cymbal. I'm very pleased with my purchase."

New Favorite!!!

"I have always loved an 8A or 5A barrel tip stick. Larger diameter sticks feel more comfortable in my hands but are too heavy. These are just perfect! They sound great, feel great, have great rebound with the long taper, and maple is really durable for me."

The beaded head you've been searching for!

"The perfect beaded jazz head and length. Feels great to play with!"

Great stick too light

"Need a longer stick than an SD4 Combo. Buy this one. Need a lighter thicker stick to the Dave Weckl's buy this one. It feels great on a snare drum! Due to the weight and my tom sizes I "loose" them in their soubd wise when going fast it seems and feel too. Always loved Vic Firth and I think I always will!! Try some Vic's you'll like em!!!"
